When most people think of a model train set, what they have in mind travels around the dining room table, or perhaps through a setup in the basement. For Newton resident Walt Smith and a handful of others throughout central Iowa, the trains are on a grander tableau, in their backyards.

Robert W. Miller Jr. dies at age 84

Businessman who co-founded Filterite Corp. Robert Walter Miller Jr., a retired businessman and co-founder of Filterite Corp. who was an avid model railroader, died Saturday of liver cancer at the Colonnade in the city's Tuscany- Canterbury neighborhood.

House fire claims life of area man

Despite heroic rescue efforts by neighbours and firefighters, a 56-year-old Seeleys Bay man died in a weekend house fire on the village's main street. Clifford Smith was alone at 167 Main Street when neighbours reported smoke billowing out of the bungalow at around 4 p.m.
