Robert McAhren, professor of history emeritus at Washington and Lee University, died Tuesday at Stonewall Jackson Hospital. He was 73. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at 11 a.m. in the Lee Chapel with the Rev. William M. Klein of Lexington Presbyterian Church presiding.

He rushed to the firehall, then located at the back of the town hall on Frank Street, and returned a few minutes later with his fellow firefighters to start the battle with the blaze. The fire wasn’t out until after midnight.
