WAYNESVILLE — The Smoky Mountain Model Railroaders will set up their collection of electric Lionel model trains Friday at Fun Things Etc., 196 N. Main St. The free display will be open through Feb. 12.

Peter Upton, 11, of Yankton studies the detailed landscape laid out for the model train displays at the Missouri Valley Model Railroad Club’s exhibit, which began Friday at the club’s headquarters at 221 West Third St. Several model trains operated simultaneously, with hundreds of cars riding the rails. Marcus Pettus, a second-grader at Harvard Park Elementary School, doesnt lack curiosity. He recently filled out a reading inventory of subjects that interest him and checked 13 of 16 available topics, including sports, games, music, insects, trains , the circus, jokes, cooking, computers, art and outer space.

When Arroyo Grande resident Curtis Reinhardt was a boy, trains held a fascination shared by the entire family. Every Thanksgiving, he helped his father and grandfather assemble an HO scale model train. And “on Christmas morning, you wouldn’t go see what presents were under the tree,” he recalled.
