Inside a room of the Pavilion for Agriculture and Livestock Education on Sunday morning, train whistles blew and children cheered as model trains barrelled around handmade tracks. In another room, families crowded around vendors’ stands, eager to purchase their own model train sets.

At first glance, nothing unique stands out about Tom Gilchrist’s garden, but given a few seconds one might hear a “choo-choo” or “chug” rise from behind the potted petunias. When the Fairwood man’s model train hobby started as a Christmas gift 20 years ago, little did he know that it would take over his backyard.

Peter Upton, 11, of Yankton studies the detailed landscape laid out for the model train displays at the Missouri Valley Model Railroad Club’s exhibit, which began Friday at the club’s headquarters at 221 West Third St. Several model trains operated simultaneously, with hundreds of cars riding the rails. The Iain Coucher era is coming to an end. For three years the Lamborghini and Aston Martin-driving former missile designer has ruled Network Rail in his abrasive, can-do style. In that time, he has established Network Rail, the publicly funded body that took over the operation and maintenance of the railways in 2002, as a model of cost-cutting and passenger safety.

It looks like Virgin Trains picked the wrong man to annoy when a string of its staff rather let down Simon Middleton at Crewe station recently. Mr Middleton is in the process of promoting his book, Build a Brand in 30 Days, and thus has access to the services of a public relations agency. “Best reinvention of a de-commissioned dockyard” – I’m not sure if there is such a prize, but if there is, then I have no doubt of the winner. One good reason that Britain ruled the waves (mostly) from Elizabethan times to the Second World War was Chatham Dockyard, a place of tremendous energy and innovation. HMS Victory was just one of the ships that was launched here.
