Despite heroic rescue efforts by neighbours and firefighters, a 56-year-old Seeleys Bay man died in a weekend house fire on the village's main street. Clifford Smith was alone at 167 Main St. when neighbours reported smoke billowing out of the bungalow at around 4 p.m.

The California High-Speed Rail Authority's forecasts of demand and ridership for a new San Francisco-to-Los Angeles high-speed train are not reliable because they are based on an inconsistent model, according to a new study by researchers at the Institute of Transportation Studies at the University of California, Berkeley (ITS Berkeley).

The California High-Speed Rail Authority's forecasts of demand and ridership for a new San Francisco-to-L.A. high-speed train are unreliable, says a new study from UC Berkeley's Institute of Transportation Studies. The study is the first academic review of the rail authoritys ridership forecasts, which was included in California's successful application for federal stimulus dollars.
