So if a car's experience is so fundamentally different than riding transit, what parallel experience can we plumb for joyous attributes? I would propose we look for a model to long-distance trains and their sense of possibility and romance, not the raw sex of cars.

Farmpark in Kirtland presents "Railroads in the Parks" Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Highlights include model trains, a railroad-themed play area, activities, historical exhibits and more. The event is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday at Lake Metroparks Farmpark, 8800 Euclid Chardon Road, Kirtland. Farmpark admission is $4 for ages 2 to 11, $5 for ages 60 and over and $6 for ages 12 to 59. Children younger than 2 are free.

Richard J. Ryan, a railroad enthusiast and model train hobbyist who worked 30 years as a machine and equipment mechanic for Western Electric, died Monday in the Center for Hospice&Palliative Care, Cheektowaga. He was 84.
