The health-services industry is one of the few bright spots in a faltering job market. The Richmond area lost nearly 5,900 jobs in the 12 months that ended in June, according to Chmura Economics & Analytics.

The Belleville Model Railroad Club is homeless but members say they're hopeful a new clubhouse can be established. "We're optimistic but we're afraid that if we don't get something soon that we're going to start falling apart," vice-president Paul Martel said.

The California High-Speed Rail Authority's forecasts of demand and ridership for a new San Francisco-to-L.A. high-speed train are unreliable, says a new study from UC Berkeley's Institute of Transportation Studies. The study is the first academic review of the rail authoritys ridership forecasts, which was included in California's successful application for federal stimulus dollars.
